Planetside 2, Sony's free to play massively multiplayer online first person shooter (F2PMMOFPS?!) has a closed beta now, which you can sign up for here.
The focus is on huge battles over persistent worlds, where the balance of power will constantly shift between the three warring factions. The scale is impressive, with truly enormous maps, and hundreds of players fighting at the same time.
The combination of large air and land forces fighting over these big alien planets is really attractive. The drama and experiences that are possible with a game on this scale sound excellent. Planetside 2 looks good, with beautiful alien landscapes and impressively large structures. It's not quite up to Warface, but it's polished enough. I'm really looking forward to playing Planetside 2 - it sounds like my kind of online game.

Great graphics, awesome massive battles. Great times. A lot like planetside 1 only far better. Much improved game play and a lot more in depth way of controlling the world. Maps are huge and great for hiding out. Day and night time combat takes place dynamically and can drastically change the flow of a battle if movements are made at night time. Headlights on all the vehicles and some players also make a huge difference in visibility at night time. Night vision goggles allow for night time operations, as well as thermal sensors allow you to see cloaked stealth players. Stealth is limited by a timer so they can't be invisible 24/7. Its good for making a quick move across a large field or a watched doorway without being seen. Control points are based on how many people you have around the control point instead of "hack the terminal and run" tactics from planetside 1 but there is a max amount of players that can be around it to cap. If you have too many you're wasting your time. Most control points need 2 players around it for max cap, but larger bases require 6. Maxes can't capture the points at all so it requires light and medium players to be around it with max support. Same vehicles mostly from the first one, but they have been redone and are well balanced. No more refueling vehicles and having to maintain fuel on the base to keep it powered. You gain power by controlling the surrounding territories. Each control point has a set of custom values to hold that spot. The more area you control the better your vehicles are and bonuses offered for your side. Anyone saying this game looks like the old one, didn't play it enough. Graphics are all updated to 512mb textures, and looks positively amazing in high resolution. If your card can handle it, USE IT. I have a HD 6850 radeon and it ran just fine with that. Large groups and heavy combat drug it down a little bit, but if you drop the stuff down to medium you'd be smooth as silk. I felt like I was there. Sun flare, motion blur, made it feel like a movie. Jet wash effect was pure eye candy. When using the scope, it blurs your peripheral vision as well giving you a "tunnel vision" effect making it even more realistic. 15 stars out of 10 if I could give it. Free to play model makes it a no brainer. At least try it out and enjoy it! Nothing lost by doing so. I can't wait for release.
